The 2018 SAG Awards announced their nominations on Wednesday morning, December 13, and there were big surprises in terms of who was nominated and who wasn’t. So while there was plenty of good news for “The Big Sick,” “Get Out,” and “Mudbound,” there were major disappointments for “The Post,” “Call Me by Your Name,” “Phantom Thread,” and “The Shape of Water.” Scroll down for our list of the biggest snubs, and check out the full list of nominees here.
“The Post” was expected to earn three nominations and to win the top prize for its ensemble cast, but it was shut out across the board. Even beloved acting veterans Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks failed to make the cut. Another celebrated thespian, Daniel Day-Lewis (“Phantom Thread”), was left out in the cold. Those two films have in common that they are late December releases that didn’t start screening for press and industry until late November, so it’s possible that the 2,500 members of the SAG Awards nominating panel didn’t have time to see them. “The Post” and “Phantom Thread” were recognized by the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, but there are fewer than a hundred Globe voters and only 300 or so Critics’ Choice voters, so they would have been much easier to reach.
But voters clearly had time to see “The Shape of Water” and “Call Me by Your Name.” Both films earned nominations but significantly under-performed relative to our predictions. “The Shape of Water” earned nominations for Sally Hawkins and Richard Jenkins, but Octavia Spencer was snubbed, and the ensemble cast was also absent from the top race. The ensemble of “Call Me” was also ignored, as were supporting actors Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg; the film’s only nomination was for lead actor Timothee Chalamet.
