Shortly after the 2018 SAG TV nominations were announced on Wednesday, December 13, Gold Derby’s editors Paul Sheehan, Chris Beachum, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon convened to debate all the major surprises and snubs. Watch our video slugfest above or listen to the audio podcast below.
Dixon admits that his takeaway from the SAG TV nominations was, “Netflix Netflix Netflix. They dominated. Nineteen nominations, plus two on the film side for ‘Mudbound.'” However, despite all those nominations, one of his favorite shows was snubbed: “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” “I’m very, very bummed about that. Netflix cannibalized itself.”
As for “GLOW’s” leading four nominations, Montgomery declares, “I’m very encouraged. There are so many new shows that come out every year and this show came out over the summer. There’s been a long wave for people to have potentially forgotten this show by the time fall awards came around.”
“This Is Us” is “not one to sleep on,” warns Beachum in the drama ensemble category. “The cast did not get in [last year because] I just don’t think enough people had truly watched it and watched the cast gel together and become really as famous as they’ve become the past year.” Now that it’s in, he thinks it can win.
Looking at the movie/mini races, Sheehan jokes, “So basically if you weren’t in ‘Feud’ or ‘Big Little Lies’ and you were a woman in a TV movie or limited series, well, you’re gonna be watching the show. Isn’t it extraordinary that two leads from ‘Feud’ and then also the two leads from ‘Big Little Lies,’ plus Laura Dern [make up the category]?”
