FX just released a teaser trailer for “Versace,” the upcoming second installment of the Emmy-winning anthology series “American Crime Story.” This sophomore edition, which begins on Jan. 17, details the murder of famed fashion designer Gianni Versace.
Edgar Ramirez portrays Versace while Grammy winner Ricky Martin is Antonio D’Amico, his longtime partner. Versace fell victim to serial killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss) in 1997. Oscar winner Penelope Cruz is also featured as Gianni’s sister Donatella Versace.
Versace was shot outside of his Miami Beach mansion on July 15, 1997. In all, Cunanan is known to have killed five people over the course of a three-month period; the 27-year-old then committed suicide eight days after Versace’s murder. The limited series is based on Maureen Orth‘s book “Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History.”
“The People v. O.J. Simpson,” the first edition of the popular franchise from producers from Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, earned critical acclaim and swept the Emmys last year. It took home nine awards including Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Mini Actor for Courtney B. Vance (as defense attorney Johnnie Cochran), Best Movie/Mini Actress for Sarah Paulson (as lead prosecutor Marcia Clark), and Best Supporting Actor for Sterling K. Brown (as prosecuting attorney Chris Darden).
