During our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above), Andrew Garfield admits to being “deeply moved” and “emotionally uplifted” by the script to “Breathe.” Directed by Andy Serkis, this Bleecker Street release tells the inspiring true story of Robin Cavendish (Garfield), an advocate for the disabled who became paralyzed from polio at the age of 28. Forced to breathe through a respirator, he devises several ways to remain mobile for the rest of his life with the help of his wife Diana (Claire Foy).

In addition to spending time with the real Diana and her son Jonathan, Garfield met with several people living with paralysis to prepare for the role. “That was a privilege to talk to them,” he divulges. “It gave me so much insight into what that is, and what that does psychologically and emotionally, what it does to ones longings, and how do you then access life? It was a really amazing experience to meet them.”
Garfield received his career first Oscar nomination this year as Best Actor for Mel Gibson‘s World War II epic “Hacksaw Ridge,” for which he also competed at BAFTA, the Golden Globes, and SAG. He previously contended at the Globes and BAFTA as Best Supporting Actor for David Fincher‘s “The Social Network” (2010), as well as at SAG for Best Ensemble. He won a BAFTA TV Award as Best Actor for “Boy A” in 2008. Can he return to the Oscar race this year?
