“The scariest thing for me to imagine is to not know what’s real or not,” reveals Aubrey Plaza about her role in the FX series “Legion.” “That’s terrifying for me, so tapping into that idea definitely reminded me just how serious mental illness is, and I think the show tackles it in a really smart way.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Plaza plays Lenny Busker, who in a way is a form of mental illness. She occupies the mind of David Haller (Dan Stevens), a mutant with telepathic and telekinetic powers, and like a parasite she burrows her way into his psyche in the hopes of taking it over completely. But Plaza doesn’t play Lenny as simply evil. “I just try to connect to the human story … For me every character, bad or good, has wants and needs just like anybody else,” she explains. “And then along the way I just wanted to have fun with the character. I really wanted to play a villain that you love, or that you like to hate.”
“Legion” will be returning next year, as will Plaza, whose insidious character escaped in someone else’s mind in the first season finale. “I honestly have no idea,” she says about next season’s storylines. “I didn’t know anything to begin with. I’m sure I won’t know anything this time. But I know how the last season ended, so I have a feeling that I’m going to get to have some play time with Jemaine Clement, and I’m really looking forward to that. I hope that happens because I just want to see those two characters interact.”
