“We were BFA musical theater majors,” says Benj Pasek, explaining backstage at the 2017 Tony Awards why winning Best Score for “Dear Evan Hansen” was more thrilling than winning an Oscar for Best Original Song for “City of Stars” (“La La Land”) earlier this year. His musical partner Justin Paul concurred: “This is sacred ground to us, and nothing compares to it.” Watch them discuss their wins with the press above.
Pasek and Paul wrote the music and lyrics for “Dear Evan Hansen.” Their musical about a teenager with social anxiety disorder came into the Tonys with nine nominations and won six overall, also including Best Musical, Best Actor (Ben Platt) and Best Featured Actress (Rachel Bay Jones). So now they have Tony and Oscar under their belt, but they could get all the way to EGOT within a year.
Next they could potentially win an Emmy this September for Best Music and Lyrics for their original song “Runnin’ Home to You” from a special musical episode of “The Flash,” “Duets,” that aired on March 21. After that they could make a showing at the 2018 Grammys, where they will be eligible for their original music from both “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen.” The current record-holder as the fastest to EGOT is Robert Lopez, who completed the grand slam in 10 years. Pasek and Paul could do it in less than 12 months.
