Katherine Langford (“13 Reasons Why”) or Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)? Finn Jones (“Iron Fist”) or Ricky Whittle (“American Gods“)? Who was the best new breakthrough star whose career exploded in 2017? We’ve compiled a list of 22 actors who have reached new levels of fame thanks to their performances on television this year, but who was the best? Click through our gallery above, and let us know what you think in our poll at the bottom of this post.
For instance, the most-watched new comedy of the year, CBS’s “Young Sheldon,” has made household names of its two leads. Iain Armitage also had a prominent role on HBO’s Emmy-winning limited series “Big Little Lies” before taking on the role of young Sheldon Cooper, a role that won Jim Parsons four Emmys for Best Comedy Actor as an adult on “The Big Bang Theory.” And Zoe Perry has earned raves for her role as Sheldon’s mother Mary, a role played by Perry’s own mother, Emmy-winner Laurie Metcalf, on “Big Bang.”
Several other new stars on our list have already been nominated for awards. The aforementioned Langford earned a surprise nomination for Best TV Drama Actress at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards. Frankie Shaw was also a surprise Golden Globe nominee, for Best TV Comedy Actress for her role on Showtime’s “SMILF.” And Brosnahan earned nominations from both the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards for her starring turn in the comedy “Maisel.”
