Sunday’s BET Awards included a special performance by New Edition, who were being honored for their lifetime achievement. The tribute opened with “Girls Trip” costars Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish singing the praises of the one-time boy band members. After other stars chimed in via video and a clip reel of the group’s musical highlights, New Edition made their way to the stage of the Microsoft Theater.
In a heartfelt acceptance speech, the six members of the band — Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant — acknowledged the highs and lows of their career that began in the projects of Roxbury, MA and led to sold out stadium concerts before a break-up and subsequent reconciliations.
The three-decade rise, fall and rebirth of the group was the subject of a compelling three-part limited series on BET earlier this year. The cast of “The New Edition Story” joined their real-life counterparts in song.
