Last year, Beyonce won Video of the Year at the BET Awards for “Formation,” the first track from her hit album “Lemonade.” She is back in contention in that category at this year’s kudos with another slice of that disc, “Sorry.” Among her rivals in that race is her sister Solange who is nominated for “Cranes in the Sky.” There will also be sibling rivalry in the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist category, which also includes Mary J. Blige, Kehlani and Rihanna.
Beyonce’s other bids for “Lemonade” are for Album of the Year, Video Director and Viewers Choice. She also contends for her collaborations on “Freedom” (with Kendrick Lamar) and “Shining” ( with Jay Z and DJ Khaled).
Among men, Bruno Mars leads with five nominations, including Album of the Year for his No. 1 disc “24K Magic” as well as Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, Video Director and Viewers Choice. The title track from his album is up for Video of the Year. That race is rounded out by the rap trio Migos for their chart-topping “Bad and Boujee” and Big Sean with “Bounce Back.”
These awards will be handed out on June 25 at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles and air live on the BET network. Winners in the 19 competitive categories, which also include achievements in film, television and sports, will be determined by BET’s Voting Academy which is comprised of entertainment professionals and fans.
