‘Big Little Lies’ cast: First look of HBO limited series starring Reese Witherspoon & Nicole Kidman

Based on the bestseller by Liane Moriarty, “Big Little Lies” takes place in the tranquil seaside town of Monterey, California, where nothing is quite as it seems. Doting moms, successful husbands, adorable children, beautiful homes: What lies will be told to keep their perfect worlds from unraveling? The project is written by David E. Kelley (10-time Emmy winner for “Picket Fences,” “L.A. Law,” “The Practice” and “Ally McBeal”) and directed by Oscar nominee Jean-Marc Vallee (“Dallas Buyers Club”). After a less than stellar Emmy season last year (2016) in the Limited Series/Movie categories that saw HBO walk away empty-handed in the above the line races, the paycaster now returns with a vengeance. First came “The Night Of,” which saw its stars Riz Ahmed and John Turturro nominated for their performances at both the Golden Globes and SAG Awards.

Up next for HBO is “Big Little Lies” with its female-driven star-studded cast looking for Emmys of their own. Reese Witherspoon, a past Oscar winner (“Walk the Line” in 2005) makes her first foray into serial television and is looking for her first Emmy nomination. Nicole Kidman, also a past Oscar winner (“The Hours” in 2002) and a current Oscar contender for “Lion,” is a past Emmy nominee (“Hemingway & Gellhorn” in 2012) hoping to win this time out.

Witherspoon’s “Wild” mother Laura Dern is a past two-time Oscar nominee (“Rambling Rose” in 1991 and “Wild” in 2014) and is a five-time Emmy nominee looking for her first trophy. They’re joined by Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz, who are both looking to score their first major award nominations.
