Billboard Music Awards: Drake dominates with record 13 wins, Beyonce and Twenty One Pilots do well too

At Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, Drake dominated, winning a record 13 races. He had picked up ten of these prizes before the show began on ABC. During the ceremony he claimed the top award, Artist of the Year, as well as Best Male Artist and Top 200 Album (“Views”). Beyonce won Best Female Artist, Best R&B Artist and Best Touring Artist. And Twenty One Pilots prevailed as both Best Duo/Group and Best Radio Artist. (See Billboard Music Awards full list of winners.)

In between performances, other winners included The Chainsmokers for both Hot 100 Song (“Closer” featuring Halsey) and Best Dance/Electronic Artist, one-time One Direction member Zayn Malik as Best New Artist, and “The Voice” coach Blake Shelton as Best Country Artist. And Tony Awards champ “Hamilton” took the Best Soundtrack/Cast Album award.

The roster of talent that Drake defeated for the Artist of the Year included reigning champ Adele as well as Beyonce, Justin Bieber, The Chainsmokers, Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, Rihanna, Twenty One Pilots and The Weeknd.

For Album of the Year, he defeated discs by Beyonce (“Lemonade”), Rihanna (“Anti”), Twenty One Pilots (“Blurryface”) and The Weeknd (“Starboy”). And for Male Artist he bested two-time champ Justin Bieber as well as Future, Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd.
