ABC continues its search for a winning formula for a reality show competition with “Boy Band,” a new series set for this summer in which young guys will sing their hearts out for a chance to be one of five members of a new group. That was the way One Direction was formed on the UK edition of “The X Factor” back in 2010. This new 10-episode series is from Matador Content, which has a big hit with “Lip Sync Battle” on SpikeTV.
The alphabet net hasn’t had any luck replicating the success of its broadcast network rivals when it comes to this hot genre. Most recently, it flopped in 2012 with “Duets”, which included the original “American Idol” Kelly Clarkson among its judging panel, and “Rising Star,” a real-time audition series in 2014. Earlier this year, there had been talk that “Idol” would be rebooted on ABC but now NBC is said to be the new home for that one-time ratings juggernaut.
In a nice case of corporate synergy, the quintet formed by viewer votes on “Boy Band” will get a contract with Hollywood Records, which is also owned by ABC’s parent company, Disney. We still don’t know the format of the series or which past boy and girl band members will take part in the show as mentors, judges and hosts.
