Clive Standen (‘Vikings’): His character Rollo ‘doesn’t like feeling the emotional pain’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]

“I drank nine bottles of mineral water and didn’t eat anything all day because when I got thrown onto the deck of the boat I wanted to spew up water,” reveals Clive Standen about this season on “Vikings.” In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he discusses the scene from this year where his character, Rollo, gets drowned: “Even though they tried their best to drown him, as he’s spewing, he’s still laughing. Because somehow the gods still favor him. I get fed up with seeing these actors that put a little bit of water in their mouths and the water just spits out.”

Standen explains that “Vikings” is “an all encompassing show. We throw ourselves into it. We don’t have stunt doubles. And it’s not just stunts. It’s the climate while we are up these mountains with extreme weather. It’s when we are on the battle field getting knocked around. And there’s big emotions on this show.”

Standen plays the viking Rollo on the History Channel series, a terrifying Viking warrior who can be spontaneously violent due to his emotional struggles. He says, “I had this fight scene in Season 3, where Rollo wants to get knocked out. He is a character that suffers from depression. He almost uses pain as a form of self harm to get away from his emotional pain. He uses fighting on the battlefield or getting punched in the face as a form of pain he understands. He doesn’t like feeling the emotional pain. So we’ve got all these emotions going on as an actor while you are learning choreography for a fight; while you’ve got the rain machines; and while people are screaming and shouting. It’s an extreme show.”
