Miranda Lambert was recently announced among the first round of performers for the 2017 CMA Awards, but she’ll take the stage more than once during the ceremony on November 8. As of this writing she’s the heavy favorite to win Female Vocalist of the Year, and it would be a historic victory.
Lambert set a record when she won this category six years in a row from 2010 to 2015. That surpassed previous record-holders Martina McBride and Reba McEntire who had both won four times. But Lambert’s winning streak abruptly ended in 2016 when Carrie Underwood had a big year with a hit album (“Storyteller”) that brought her back to the winner’s circle. Underwood had previously won three in a row from 2006 to 2008, so she joined McBride and McEntire in a tie for second place with four wins.
But now it’s Lambert who’s back with a big year. She’s the most nominated artist of 2017 with five bids, which is almost as many as her four rivals combined: Underwood, McEntire, and Kelsea Ballerini have no other nominations, while Maren Morris is up for three total. Lambert is the only Female Vocalist contender who is also up for Album (“The Weight of These Wings”), Single (“Tin Man”), and Song of the Year (“Tin Man”), which indicates broad support from the Country Music Association.
