Damien Chazelle script ‘The Claim’ to be made by Oceanside Media but he won’t direct

Damien Chazelle‘s last two films — “Whiplash” and “La La Land” — earned him Oscar nominations for writing. Now comes word that another of his scripts, “The Claim,” has been optioned by Oceanside Media and Route One. It made the 2010 edition of the Black List as one of the hottest scripts in Hollywood.

“The Claim” tells the story of a single father whose criminal past comes back to haunt him when his daughter is kidnapped. His search for her is complicated by a couple who claim that she is their daughter, not his.  Oceanside is hoping to begin production on “The Claim” later this year with a 2018 release date.

However, while Chazelle helmed both “Whiplash” and “La La Land” (and won the Best Director Oscar for the latter) he won’t be directing this mystery thriller. Rather, he is reuniting with “La La Land” leading man Ryan Gosling on “First Man,” a biopic of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. Oscar winner Josh Singer (“Spotlight”) handled scripting on this one, adapting James Hansen‘s bestseller “First Man: A Life of Neil A. Armstrong.” The film is set for release on Oct. 16, 2018.
