‘Dancing with the Stars’: Do YouTube stats reveal Bonner Bolton as the season’s most popular contestant?

Dancing with the Stars” is fundamentally about two things: dance ability and popularity. Half of the results are determined by the scores from expert judges, but the other half comes from the mercurial tastes of fans voting at home. And though we always know exactly where the stars stand with the judges it’s harder to figure out which way the wind is blowing when it comes to who the viewers want to see. But if YouTube is any indication, viewers want Bonner Bolton — badly.

“Dancing with the Stars” released all of Monday night’s performances on YouTube, and Bolton’s is far away the most watched video with more than 874,000 views as of this writing, despite the fact that he had one of the lower scores of the evening: 22 out of 40, which landed him in ninth place for the night. But even though the judges were critical of his cha cha with pro partner Sharna Burgess (watch above), they could hardly contain how smitten they were by the sexy cowboy. Carrie Ann Inaba told him, “Not only do you have the looks, you have the moves.” Julianne Hough added, “I’m a sucker for a country guy.” And Bruno Tonioli remarked, “How can you resist a cowboy with a killer forward thrust?”

If audiences at home feel the same way, Bolton could become a contender to win the season if he polishes up his dance moves. But perhaps even more surprising is the celeb who has gotten the second most views: Major League Baseball star David Ross with over half a million. Few knew what to expect from Ross on the dance floor, since no baseball player has ever competed on “DWTS” before, but he impressed the judges, and apparently online fans as well.

Olympic gymnast Simone Biles got the night’s top score but has to settle for being the third most watched video, neck-and-neck with singer Normani Kordei at over 340,000. “Glee” actress Heather Morris rounds out the top five with over a quarter-million views.

Of course, YouTube views don’t mean a thing if those viewers aren’t voting when it counts, but it could give us a glimpse into who is making the biggest impact on the audience. Take a look below at this week’s most watched YouTube performance videos as of this writing:
