After eight weeks there’s a new “Dancing with the Stars” frontrunner! Since the beginning of season 24 gymnast Simone Biles had been the celeb to beat according to our users who have entered our predictions contests. But the momentum has suddenly shifted, and now singer Normani Kordei has taken over as our favorite to win the Mirror Ball Trophy.
As of this writing Kordei gets leading odds of 5/6, which translates to a 54% chance of winning the season. That’s way up from last week when she ranked second with 11/5 odds (31% chance of winning). So what’s changed? Last week on “Movie Night” Kordei finished on top of the leaderboard for the fourth time so far this season — that’s far more than any other contestant. But it was more than just the highest score of the night. It was also just the second perfect score of the season: straight 10s from all four judges for a total of 40 out of 40. So that Argentine tango, inspired by foreign films, may be remembered as the game-changing plot twist of season 24.
But don’t count out Biles just yet. She may be down, but she’s not out. She ranks second with 9/5 odds (36% chance of winning), down from last week when she had leading odds of 6/5 (44% chance of winning). But she’s not so far down that she couldn’t potentially reclaim her frontrunner status with another great dance. She hasn’t had the highest judges’ score since the very first night of the season, but she’s consistently near the top of the leaderboard. So she clearly has what it takes.
Football player Rashad Jennings holds on to third place in our prediction rankings, though his odds have slipped somewhat: he currently gets 11/1 odds (9% chance of winning), down from 9/2 odds last week (18% chance of winning). So it looks like “DWTS” has become a clear two-way race between Kordei and Biles, with Jennings positioning himself to upset.
None of our users are currently predicting the remaining two contestants, bull rider Bonner Bolton and baseball player David Ross. Those two surprisingly outlasted higher scoring dancers like Heather Morris and Nancy Kerrigan, but they’re still underdogs with 80/1 odds each (around 1% chance of winning). Are we foolish for continuing to underestimate them, or have they finally plateaued?
