Rashad Jennings took us by surprise when he won the Mirror Ball Trophy on “Dancing with the Stars” on Tuesday, May 23. Our users, who made their predictions at Gold Derby, gave Normani Kordei best odds to win the season, and for good reason: she had the highest cumulative judges’ score of any contestant and topped the leaderboard five times. But when we polled our readers at the end of the season they told us that Jennings truly deserved the Mirror Ball title. Check out the complete results at the bottom of this post.
Jennings was the rightful winner according to 52% of our respondents. The football player became the fourth NFL star to win “DWTS,” following Emmitt Smith (season three), Hines Ward (season 12) and Donald Driver (season 14). He got there thanks in no small part to his freestyle routine, which ended Monday night’s show with a bang. He was the last contestant to perform, so his was the last performance viewers saw before they started voting for their favorites — that didn’t hurt.
But 37% of our readers think Kordei should have won the Mirror Ball Trophy. Not only did she miss out on the title, she ended up in third place after her judges’ scores were combined with viewer votes. Another 7% of respondents said the winner should have been a contestant who didn’t even make the finals — perhaps Heather Morris or Simone Biles, who consistently received high scores but were eliminated sooner than expected.
Only 4% of readers think David Ross should have won. Ross was the first baseball player ever to compete on the show, and despite consistently getting lower scores than his competitors, he advanced to the finals on the strength of viewer votes. He ultimately finished in second place, despite only being the sixth best dancer of the season according to the judges’ scores.
