Football player Rashad Jennings just topped the judges’ leaderboard on “Dancing with the Stars.” In week two of the competition he performed a Viennese waltz with pro partner Emma Slater and received straight 8s from the judges, for a total of 32 out of 40. That tied him with singer Normani Kordei and put him ahead of “Glee” actress Heather Morris and gymnast Simone Biles. So does that make Jennings the new frontrunner to win? Watch his waltz above and let us know what you think.
We’ve been underestimating Jennings from the beginning. Before the season started none of us thought he would win the Mirror Ball Trophy, but in the season premiere episode he surprised us by finishing in second place on the judges’ leaderboard, just one point behind frontrunner Biles. So then in week two his odds improved to win the season, but few of us thought he would get the highest judges’ score. We were wrong again.
Julianne Hough thought his waltz was “hot.” Bruno Tonioli called it “a wonderful performance.” Carrie Ann Inaba said Jennings held his partner Slater “the way all women want to be held. There’s a safety and security in this partnership that is beautiful.” And Len Goodman said, “The bottom line: I liked it.” So now we might have to start looking at Jennings more seriously as a contender to win. Football players have famously done well on “DWTS,” claiming three Mirror Ball Trophies in the past: Emmitt Smith (season three), Hines Ward (season 12) and Donald Driver (season 14).
