This may be the most competitive season of “Dancing with the Stars” in years. That’s what I’ve noticed in recent weeks. Sure, Jordan Fisher and Lindsey Stirling seem like the overwhelming favorites for the Mirror Ball Trophy, but the rest of the contestants are so evenly matched that almost any of the other seven remaining celebs could be a potential finalist. I discussed the most recent “Disney Night” episode with Gold Derby contributor Jeffrey Kare. Watch our slugfest above.
“I agree,” says Kare. “I’m not sure if I really saw any weak link. I thought [lowest scorers Nick Lachey and Peta Murgatroyd] gave a pretty clever routine that was a good match with ‘The Jungle Book.’ Even [Sasha Pieterse and Gleb Savchenko] who were eliminated this week gave a dance that seemed a perfect match to ‘Kiss the Girl’ [from ‘The Little Mermaid’].”
Pieterse ends her run on the show in 10th place, but I think that belies how well she did in general. The contestants have been so evenly matched that in week three only two points separated 3rd place from 10th place. In week four the bottom eight competitors were two points apart. There was more separation on “Disney Night,” but seven out of the 10 couples received a 9 from at least one judge. The field is so strong that, when I look back at season 24 for instance, I wonder if second-place-finisher David Ross would have even made it into the top eight in a lineup like this.
