“You guys are the power couple,” said “Dancing with the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba in response to Olympic gymnast Simone Biles‘s tango with her pro partner Sasha Farber. That tango was the last routine performed in the season 24 premiere episode that aired on March 20, and it was worth the wait. Inaba added that it was an “exquisite exhibition of technique, elegance and power,” and it ended up getting the highest judges’ score of the night.
Biles and Farber received straight 8s from Inaba, Len Goodman, Julianne Hough and Bruno Tonioli for a total of 32 out of 40, better than any of her rivals. And the praise from the other three judges was just as effusive as Inaba’s. Goodman said it was “a great balance of performance and dance content … That was the dance of the night.” Hough added, “That was amazing … You are the whole package.” Tonioli was the last to gush, proclaiming, “You’re so deliciously lovely … Well done.”
Biles was already the frontrunner for the Mirror Ball Trophy before the season even started, and her season-premiere performance did nothing to change that perception. She’s already used to winning, of course. She won four gold medals and one bronze in women’s gymnastics during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. But if she goes all the way on “DWTS” it would be the first Mirror Ball victory for her partner Farber. So they’re both undoubtedly hoping for more nights like this one.
