“She really seems to have ended the night on a high note with her being the final contestant to have gone on, as well as performing such a classic number from ‘Sweet Charity.’ That was such a great way to sell it,” said Gold Derby contributor Jeffrey Kare about “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Normani Kordei in our weekly video slugfest (watch above). We discussed week three of the competition, “Vegas Night,” where Kordei finished at the top of the leaderboard.
Kordei performed a foxtrot with pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy, and the judges adored the routine, giving her the highest total score of the season so far: 34 out of 40, which included a pair of 9s from Julianne Hough and Bruno Tonioli. She finished just one point ahead of Heather Morris, whom Kare calls “a frontrunner,” and Nancy Kerrigan, who performed a samba with partner Artem Chigvintsev.
After two weeks of mid-range scores, Kerrigan had a breakthrough on “Vegas Night.” Chigvintsev was undoubtedly thrilled with the scores, but he seemed even more excited to meet his idol, Ricky Martin. He and Kerrigan danced to Martin’s song “Shake Your Bon-Bon,” and Chigvintsev has performed competitively to Martin’s music before. He was so smitten that I thought, half-jokingly, it might be fun to see Martin compete on “DWTS” with Chigvintsev as his pro partner. “I guess that would be real interesting seeing a same-sex ‘Dancing with the Stars,'” Kare mused, “or they could do a mix-up where they have boy-girl vs. girl-girl vs. boy-boy — that would be a more interesting competition.”
Your move, ABC! A gender-mixed “DWTS” would make for a great 25th season this fall.
