“Okay, I have questions,” says Bill (Pearl Mackie) in BBC America’s latest “Doctor Who” preview clip from episode three, “Thin Ice.” After escaping a planet of emoji-bots in last week’s episode, “Smile,” she and the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) intended to travel back to the present day. However, the Doctor’s TARDIS has different plans for them. Watch above.
“You never said we could travel to parallel worlds,” says a confused Bill after they stepped out onto the frozen River Thames in the middle of London. But the Doctor explains, “It’s not a parallel world … [It’s] our London. We’re on the Thames, the last great frost fair — 1814, February the fourth.” The Doctor is referring to the rare occasions in Britain’s history between the 17th and 19th centuries when conditions were right to freeze the Thames. The frost fairs were real, but the monster that’s lurking underneath — that would be this episode’s flight of fancy.
But why did the TARDIS take them there instead of back home as the Doctor intended? He tells Bill, “You don’t steer the TARDIS, you reason with it, unsuccessfully most of the time. She’s a bad girl, always looking for trouble.” Watch the new clip from “Thin Ice” above, and you can hear what Steven Moffat has to say about it here.
