FX confirmed Thursday that it has renewed the Emmy-winning comedy series “Baskets” for a third season. The news comes on the day of the airing of the eighth episode in the sophomore edition of this dark comedy satire. Zach Galifianakis stars as Chip Baskets, an aspiring professional clown.
After flunking out at an oddly prestigious Parisian clown school, he returns home to drearily monotone Bakersfield, Ca. and joins a local rodeo in his quest to make a living as a clown, against the odds and in the shadow of his more successful twin Dale (also played by Galifianakis) and his judgmental mother (played hilariously by stand-up comedian Louie Anderson in drag). Anderson won the Comedy Supporting Actor Emmy last year and continues to dazzle with his risky and delightfully offbeat performance as the take-no-prisoners matriarch with heart.
In making the announcement, Nick Grad, President of Original Programming at FX, said, “this year ‘Baskets’ has solidified its standing as one of the best comedies on television, building on the momentum of its breakout first season that brought critical acclaim and awards.” He went on to extend, “our thanks to Jonathan Krisel, Louis C.K., Zach Galifianakis and the rest of the creative team, Louie Anderson, Martha Kelly and the full cast and crew for taking us on this journey with ‘Baskets’.”
