The Critics’ Choice TV Awards have long been supporters of FX’s “American Horror Story” franchise, bestowing it with 18 nominations and four wins over the years. However, series stalwart Evan Peters had never earned his own acting nomination. Until now. Peters was nominated on Wednesday as Best Movie/Mini Actor for his work on “American Horror Story: Cult” for playing murderous cult leader Kai Anderson. Might Peters parlay this Critics’ Choice bid into his first ever nomination at the upcoming Golden Globes?
In addition to portraying Kai on “AHS: Cult,” Peters also embodied such real life cult leaders as Charles Manson, Marshall Applewhite, David Koresh and Jim Jones, plus Jesus and Andy Warhol. Peters told us in our recent webchat that he heavily researched the parts, admitting, “I just tried to immerse myself as much as I could into all those characters because they were real people, and I felt like it was important to try to make it as real as possible.” Kai’s perpetual darkness even affected Peters’ own life. He revealed, “It was intense, and it was hard, and it was pretty exhausting, having to stretch myself like that, to go to those places all the time.” Watch Peters’ full interview.
Over the years, several of Peters’ “American Horror Story” co-stars have taken home their own Critics’ Choice TV Awards, including Sarah Paulson and Zachary Quinto (“AHS: Asylum”), Jessica Lange (“AHS: Coven”), and Paulson again (“AHS: Freak Show”). Some of the other nominees over the years have included James Cromwell and Lily Rabe (“AHS: Asylum”), Kathy Bates (“AHS: Coven” and “AHS: Hotel”), Finn Wittrock (“AHS: Freak Show”) and Wes Bentley (“AHS: Hotel”).
Besides Peters, the other nominees in the running for Best Movie/Mini Actor are Jeff Daniels (“Godless”), Robert De Niro (“The Wizard of Lies”), Ewan McGregor (“Fargo”), Jack O’Connell (“Godless”), Bill Pullman (“The Sinner”) and Jimmy Tatro (“American Vandal”). In all FX came away with 13 total nominations at this year’s Critics’ Choice TV Awards, good enough for third place among networks behind only Netflix (20) and HBO (15). FX’s noms include six for “Feud: Bette and Joan,” five for “Fargo,” one for “Archer” and Peters’ sole bid for “American Horror Story: Cult.” The Critics’ Choice winners will be announced Thursday, January 11, 2018 on CW.
Looking ahead at the Golden Globes, Peters face stiff competition in the race for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor from the likes of De Niro, McGregor, Daniels, Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”), Geoffrey Rush (“Genius”) and Jude Law (“The Young Pope”).
