We’re only a month into the presidency of Donald Trump, and it’s already been a bumpy ride. Massive protests across the globe, court battles over an attempted ban on Muslim immigrants, bizarre press conferences, allegations of collusion with Russia, and “alternative facts” — oh my. The political drama has been a golden opportunity for political comedy, and Samantha Bee has certainly capitalized with her TBS variety series “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.” Its ratings are through the roof.
As reported by our sister site Variety, the show debuted one year ago with just under one million total viewers, but the recent February 8, 2017 episode scored 2.51 million viewers, including 1.16 million in the coveted 18-49 demo — the show’s audience has nearly tripled! But the growth is especially pronounced from the last episode of 2016 (1.32 million) to the first episode of 2017 (2.11 million).
“Full Frontal” is largely a one-woman show in which Bee delivers political commentary about the events of the week in a fiery, no-holds-barred style. Bee is an alumna from Jon Stewart‘s “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central. Stewart stepped down from that show in August 2015, just as Trumpism was steering politics into uncharted waters. The leading liberal satirist left a vacuum that has since been filled by Bee and her fellow “Daily Show” alums John Oliver (HBO’s “Last Week Tonight”) and Stephen Colbert (CBS’s “The Late Show”), among others, and it looks like Bee’s voice has especially resonated with viewers seeking a port in the storm of political upheaval.
Bee’s debut last spring earned her an Emmy nomination for Best Variety Series Writing. The show has also earned nominations at the Critics’ Choice, Directors Guild, and Producers Guild Awards, and it won Best Achievement in News and Information at the Television Critics Association Awards.
