“I think the big story this year has to be ‘Will and Grace.’ That was such a surprise for me. I never expected it to be as good as it has been, and I’m expecting nominations across the board,” declares Rob Licuria, who is joined by fellow editor Matt Noble and contributing writer Riley Chow to debate which comedy series and performers are in and out at the Golden Globes this year. As all savvy awards pundits know, the Globes have a long history of embracing new shows. With last year’s champ ‘Atlanta’ out of the running because it did not air any eligible episodes in 2017, which shows are most likely to make their mark at the Globes this year? Watch our video slugfest above.
“I think ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ has come back strong. It won Globes a long time ago,” Noble counters. ” It’s interesting, with this and ‘Will and Grace.’ We know the Globes love new shows; these shows aren’t new, but we haven’t seen them in a while.” Licuria agrees, but adds that a returning favorite might surprise us. “I question whether ‘black-ish’ might improve its showing from last year, as it did win a Globe for Tracee Ellis Ross. It has been just as good this season,” he says.
Chow thinks we might be underestimating Netflix’s “Master of None,” but is cautious about predicting it because of a quirk in what was nominated last year. He says that “Master of None” ‘actually feels like something that the Globes would like, but I only have it in fifth place because two years ago when the first season was eligible, it didn’t even get nominated for series, when there was a tie and there was six nominees,” he argues.
