According to Gold Derby’s combined predictions, Laura Dern is the frontrunner to win her fourth career Golden Globe this year as Best TV Supporting Actress for HBO’s limited series “Big Little Lies.” However, not all of our odds-makers are convinced Dern will prevail. Five of our Top 24 Users and six All-Star Users instead think that Chrissy Metz will take home her first industry accolade for NBC’s family drama “This Is Us.” Who do YOU think will win?
Dern is a favorite of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, having taken home three trophies throughout her career for “Afterburn” (1992), “Recount” (2008) and “Enlightened” (2011). Dern now has leading 3/10 odds to take home another trophy for playing conceited neighbor Renata Klein on “Big Little Lies,” following her recent Emmy victory for the same role. However, might Globe voters instead want to spread the wealth to someone else?
If so, look no further than Metz. She comes in second place with 9/1 odds for portraying Kate Pearson, who in Season 2 of “This Is Us” went through an emotional storyline in which she had a miscarriage. After losing last year’s Golden Globe to Olivia Colman (“The Night Manager”), Metz could stage a massive comeback this year. Metz was also nominated at the Emmys and Critics’ Choice Awards for her breakout role of Kate.
As for the other Best TV Supporting Actress nominees, Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) comes in third place with 10/1 odds, Shailene Woodley (“Big Little Lies”) is fourth place with 33/1 odds, and Michelle Pfeiffer (“The Wizard of Lies) is last place with 50/1 odds.
