iHeart Radio Awards: The Chainsmokers sweep, Drake and Twenty One Pilots take four each

The Chainsmokers may have been all but shut out of the recent Grammys, winning just Best Dance Recording for “Don’t Let Me Down,” but they were the big winners at Sunday’s iHeartRadio Radio Music Awards, winning five of their 10 races. The EDM duo claimed Best New Artist here over, among others, Chance the Rapper who edged them out for that Grammys. And they swept the dance categories too. (See the full list of winners)

Drake, who led with 11 nominations, ended the evening with four awards as did Twenty One Pilots. Justin Timberlake, who kicked off last Sunday’s Oscars with a rollicking performance of “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” won Song of the Year here for this “Trolls” tune. We didn’t get any rematches between Grammy rivals Adele and Beyonce. The former, who swept the top awards at last month’s Grammys, won Best Female Artist. And Beyonce, who was denied Album of the Year by the Grammys yet again, lost her bids for R&B Artist, R&B Song, Music Video and Fan Army.

Ryan Seacrest hosted the fourth annual edition of these awards which aired live on TBS, TNT and truTV and were simulcast on iHeartMedia stations nationwide.

As with the Grammys, the iHeartRadio Radio Music Awards were as much about performances as prize giving. Among those to take to the stage with live performances including first-time duets and collaborations were: Big Sean, The Chainsmokers, Noah Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes, Katy Perry, Thomas Rhett and Ed Sheeran.
