Jason Jones on ‘The Detour’ season 2: ‘Who the hell did I marry?’ [WATCH]

“If the theme we were exploring in season one was, ‘Are we good parents?’ then the season-two theme is ‘Who the hell did I marry?'” says Jason Jones about his TBS comedy series “The Detour,” about the misadventures of the Parker family. When the first season ended last year Nate (Jones) found out that his wife Robin (Natalie Zea) has a mysterious past and multiple aliases. Season two picked up with the family moving to New York City, where Nate was hired for a new job. Watch our complete video chat with Jones above.

“I didn’t want to do the road-trip show or ‘Vacation: The Series,'” Jones explains about why the show shifted from the family-road-trip format of the first season to the New York locale of the second. But the series retains its core approach: “The show is always about how far we can bend a family before they break. So season one was, hey let’s put them on a road trip, which is always stressful and awful, and then season two was, let’s send them to the most stressful city on Earth. And season three — you’re going to see.”

In pushing the Parker family to the edge, “The Detour” certainly pushes the envelope in terms of its content, but the TBS network hasn’t said no to many of the show’s outlandish ideas. There was one, though. Jones remembers, “There’s a home birth … and I wanted to do a crowning shot, and they said absolutely not.” So they had to get creative: “Okay, screw them — we’re going to do a reverse crowning shot from the baby’s point of view … so it actually forced us to be a little more creative with the shot.”
