Jay Ellis chats his ‘Insecure’ status as a ‘lost boyfriend’ and working with Issa Rae [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]

“I’m a lost boyfriend,” admits actor Jay Ellis in an interview with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video above) about the status of his “Insecure” character Lawrence Walker. He plays the boyfriend of protagonist Issa Dee (played by co-creator/head writer/executive producer Issa Rae), and reflecting on Lawrence’s arc, Ellis says, “When you meet him, he’s definitely at his low and he’s not sure of himself; he doesn’t have a lot of confidence. He’s insecure and we see him get some of those things back and grow to find himself a little bit, fall back in love with Issa and you see that relationship at its best and then you see it all fall apart at the same time.”

Speaking from his trailer while on a lunch break from shooting the second season on location at Long Beach, Ellis teases, “What we do get to see in Season 2 is a lot more of Lawrence’s life. We get to see his world open up. It’s Issa and our writers’ intention that no matter what happens between Issa and Lawrence that Lawrence is always there in some way.”

The eight-episode first season of the dramedy aired last fall on HBO, and the show will return for an eight-episode second season next month. Ellis continues, “He’s picking up the pieces. What do you do post this traumatic breakup, when a situation like that happens with a woman you think you’re going to spend the rest of your life with, do you go back? Do you distance yourself? Do you move on? You focus on something completely different; maybe you throw yourself in work or friendship — whatever it is? So we see Lawrence pick up all those pieces. He’s mentally still a little clouded and not really sure about what’s going on and so we get to see him stumble through that, figure that out.”
