Jonathan Majors (‘When We Rise’): ‘Growing up, you don’t really come across a lot of gay rights history’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]

“Growing up, you don’t really come across a lot of gay rights history,” divulges Jonathan Majors during our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above) about his role in “When We Rise.” Created by Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”), this ABC limited series recounts the gay rights movement in America. Majors stars as activist Ken Jones, played in adulthood by Michael Kenneth Williams. The series features a large ensemble cast, including Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths, David Hyde Pierce, Whoopi Goldberg, and Rosie O’Donnell.

To prepare for the role, the actor immersed himself in research. Majors, “started at Stonewall, and then went backwards and forwards to figure out where we are now.” He then, “looked at it from the point of view of Ken, what he was dealing with, one being African American, two being Christian, three being in the military, and what it would’ve been like with what relations were – or the lack of relations – in those three specific communities around homosexuality.”

Majors studied drama at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and at Yale University. He can next be seen in the upcoming films “Hostiles,” “White Boy Rick,” and “Captive State.” Check out our full interview above for more about his work in “When We Rise.”
