‘Mr. Robot’ season 3 reviews: USA series is still ‘some of the most fascinating television happening right now’

Season three of USA Network’s Emmy award-winning series “Mr. Robot” premiers on Thursday, October 11, to mostly positive notices from critics, with a score of 73 on Metacritic as of this writing. Created by Sam Esmail, this dramatic, mind-bending thriller revolves around Elliot (Rami Malek), a young programmer working as a cyber-security engineer by day and a hacker by night, but who may not be able to control his own psyche. An alternate personality, Mr. Robot (Christian Slater), takes him over with a plot to overthrow an unscrupulous financial system.

Liz Shannon Miller (Indiewire) praises the new episodes, giving them a rating of A-. She writes, “If you are willing to engage, willing to challenge yourself, it’s some of the most fascinating television happening right now. Though given the past two seasons, that’s hardly at all a twist.”

Tim Goodman (The Hollywood Reporter) agrees, saying, “Perhaps the best and least complicated thing to say about it heading into season three is that it’s back in a big way, creatively and energetically patching up many of the problems that hurt its slower second season.”

Allison Keene (Collider) gives the season three stars, explaining, “The show is still exceptionally stylish, the cast is excellent (especially, once again, Malek, of whom much is asked and from whom much is given).”

And Alan Sepinwall (UPROXX) writes, “‘Mr. Robot’ may never again be as shiny and sleek as it was in its debut, but it’s become easier to focus on the many things it does so very well.”

Malek won an Emmy for Best Drama Actor in 2016 for the show’s first season. He has twice competed at SAG and the Golden Globes for the role, though he has yet to win either of those prizes. “Mr. Robot” has received a total of nine Emmy bids throughout its run, including Best Drama Series in 2016. In addition to Malek’s victory, the show won the Emmy for Best Music Composition for season one. Could the third season succeed in the upcoming awards derby?
