The 2017 MTV Movie Awards for the first time have branched out to include TV series with a new category for Best Actor in a Show, and based on Gold Derby’s predictions Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”) is far out front to win with leading 9/10 odds. The breakout star of this 1980s-set Netflix drama about the search for a missing boy has four total nominations, more than any other TV program, including bids for Show of the Year, Best Villain (Demogorgon) and Best Hero (Brown). The MTV Awards ceremony will take place Sunday, May 7 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, hosted by Adam Devine.
Should Brown falter at the finish line, our odds-makers predict Emilia Clarke of HBO’s fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” in second place to prevail with odds of 7/2. “Game of Thrones” is the most rewarded show in Emmy Awards history with 38 trophies, but will MTV voters want to honor the six-year-old series when they can anoint a brand new winner like “Stranger Things” instead? “Game of Thrones” is also up for Show of the Year and Best Tearjerker (Hodor’s Death).
Coming in next, also with 7/2 odds, is reigning Golden Globe winner Donald Glover from FX’s “Atlanta.” The Emmy hopeful, who creates, produces and writes the hip comedy, also contends for Show of the Year, while co-stars Brian Tyree Henry and Lakeith Stanfield are up for Best Duo.
NBC’s family drama “This Is Us” is represented in fourth place with singer-actress Mandy Moore (9/2 odds). The show has two other nominations as well: Show of the Year and Best Tearjerker (Jack and Randall at karate). Can Moore’s notoriety as a multi-hyphenate help her win with the music-centered TV network?
Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays new baddie Negan on “The Walking Dead” and enjoys 9/2 odds to prevail. Since Morgan is also up for Best Villain, that may be the category in which voters decide to honor him, and so they could decide to spread the wealth here in the race for Best Actor in the Show.
Rounding out the category in last place is Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) with 5/1 odds. The inspirational actress won the Golden Globe for her CW comedy’s breakthrough first season and is a hit with the young crowd. Find out who wins Best Actor in a Show Sunday, May 7, on MTV.
