“Once Upon a Time” is returning for season seven despite many of the original cast leaving the show. Producers are promising to take the fantasy show in a new direction and have been on a hiring spree. They just signed “Burn Notice” leading lady Gabrielle Anwar and “Devious Maids” scene-stealer Dania Ramirez to be regulars on this reboot. Another three actresses — Mekia Cox (“Chicago Med”), Adelaide Kane (“Reign”) and Rose Reynolds (“Wasted”) — are set to have recurring roles.
We don’t know yet how any of their characters will fit into the story of Storybrooke. But that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate. Let’s start with the two new series regulars. After reading our theories on who they might be playing, vote in our poll and then sound off in the comments section.
Anwar played a complicated character on “Burn Notice,” whose past was murky. She could well take on another such role here. Indeed, it is easy to see her as one of the villains, albeit one with a good side, much as Regina (Lana Parrilla) was for most of the first six seasons.
Parilla is one of just three of the original cast set to return as regulars for season seven. She was at the center of the story from the start, as her adopted son Henry (Jared Gilmore) went in search for his birth mother Emma (Jennifer Morrison) after discovering her existence in a book of fairy tales. The season six finale saw Emma married to Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue).
While Morrison and Gilmore are exiting, O’Donoghue is staying and will be seen in the new time line in which a grown-up Henry (Andrew J. West) is reunited with his daughter Lucy (Alison Fernandez) who has her own book of fairy tales. Could Ramirez, who broke hearts as a woman separated from her son on “Devious Maids,” be Lucy’s heroic mother?
