True love has played an important part of the “One Upon a Time” mythology since the pilot, when Prince Charming’s kiss broke the curse that kept Snow White asleep. This season, the writing team led by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz put a new twist on the sleeping curse concept when Regina’s alter ego the Evil Queen cast a spell on Snow and Charming so that neither can be awake at the same time. Emma also used the power of a mother’s true love to wake up Henry from a sleeping curse back in the Season 1 finale.
