“I will cleanse them from this Earth,” says Tatiana Maslany as the unhinged Helena in a new first-look scene from the upcoming fifth and final season of “Orphan Black.” BBC America premiered the new clip online on Wednesday, May 31, in anticipation of its June 10 season premiere. Watch it above.
The Ukranian Helena was introduced in season one as an assassin on a mission to kill her sister clones, but she eventually switched sides and began fighting for the good guys while trying to protect her unborn children. But is she really reformed? In the clip she storms into a church and stabs a woman in the back, but is shocked to see that the woman she has killed is one of her sister clones. What does it mean? Who sent her there? Is it real or perhaps just a dream?
Maslany plays both Helena and her victim in the clip, and she plays a number of other roles from various backgrounds in the series, including the British Sarah Manning, Canadian soccer mom Alison Hendrix, San Francisco scientist Cosima Niehaus, and the ruthless Rachel Duncan. For her various roles Maslany earned two Emmy nominations for Best Drama Actress (2015-2016), winning on her second try. But she won’t be back to defend her title in this year’s race because the show’s June 10 season premiere is too late to be eligible in this year’s contest. She’s taking the year off with the hopes of making a dramatic last stand at the Emmys in 2018.
