“Fences” is an adaptation of August Wilson‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning play directed by Denzel Washington. He also stars as a father struggling with race relations in 1950s America while trying to raise his family. It has four Oscar nominations.
“Hacksaw Ridge” stars Andrew Garfield as a WWII medic who served during the Battle of Okinawa while refusing to carry a weapon in this Mel Gibson-directed war drama. It has six Oscar nominations.
“Hell or High Water” features Jeff Bridges as a Texas ranger hunting down two brothers on a bank robbing spree in David Mackenzie‘s tightly wound thriller. It has four Oscar nominations.
“Hidden Figures,” directed by Theodore Melfi, highlights the personal and professional lives of black female mathematicians who helped NASA launch their first successful space missions. It has three Oscar nominations.
“La La Land” stars Emma Stone as an aspiring actress who falls in love with a jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling) in this LA-based whimsical musical from Damien Chazelle. It has 14 Oscar nominations, tying the record of “All About Eve” (1950) and “Titanic” (1997).
“Lion,” directed by Garth Davis, tells the story of Saroo Brierley (Dev Patel), an Indian boy living in Australia who seeks out the family he was separated from in Calcutta 25 years ago. It has six Oscar nominations.
“Manchester by the Sea” is Kenneth Lonergan‘s heart-wrenching domestic drama about a man (Casey Affleck) forced to come to terms with his troubled past when he is made guardian of his nephew. It has six Oscar nominations.
“Moonlight” is Barry Jenkins‘ coming-of-age drama about a young man struggling to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough Miami neighborhood. It has eight Oscar nominations.
