Clash of the Oscar experts! Watch us panic as we try to figure out who’s really ahead to win the top races. In this video chat above, Chris Rosen (EW) and I differ strongly with Mike Hogan (Vanity Fair) over Best Actor. Chris and I pick Denzel Washington (“Fences”), who gets 1/1 odds from Gold Derby to prevail. Mike backs Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”) with 5/4 odds.
Out of 30 Experts making picks at Gold Derby at the time of this video chat, 16 said Denzel, 14 said Casey, but things have changed since then. Mike just switched to Denzel so now the pundits are evenly tied. That’s how close that race is.
And, let’s be honest, that’s how fickle we all are as we wrestle with many tight races. Also since this video, Chris dropped Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”) to scoot out onto a limb for Dev Patel (“Lion”) for Best Supporting Actor. No doubt all Gold Derby pundits will make many more changes over the next few, remaining days.
