Time is running out to predict the 2017 Oscar nominations, which are announced tomorrow, January 24, beginning at 5:18 a.m. PT/8:18 a.m. ET. The deadline for voting was January 13, so the academy’s decisions were already made 10 days ago, but that’s not stopping our forum posters from agonizing over this year’s contenders right up until the last minute. What predictions are they talking themselves into and out of? And how many of those last-minute changes and renegade hunches pay off?
Among the biggest dilemmas facing our readers is the race for Best Actor, where some are anticipating a surprise: could Jake Gyllenhaal follow his surprise BAFTA nomination for “Nocturnal Animals” with an Oscar bid? Gyllenhaal hasn’t been nominated since he contended for Best Supporting Actor 11 years ago for “Brokeback Mountain” (2005).
Then there’s Best Director, where four filmmakers appear to be safe — Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”), Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”), Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”) and Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”). If we’re right about those four, who will take the last slot: BAFTA nominee Tom Ford (“Nocturnal Animals”), DGA nominee Garth Davis (“Lion”), Golden Globe nominee Mel Gibson (“Hacksaw Ridge”) or Critics’ Choice nominee David Mackenzie (“Hell or High Water”)? Or maybe even Martin Scorsese (“Silence”), who has been overlooked for most of the season.
So what else are our forum posters losing sleep over? Read some of their comments below about Emily Blunt, “Jackie,” “O.J.: Made in America” and more, and then join the discussion in our message boards.
Ianscheese: “Panicking over pretty much every category. Wanting ‘Jackie’ and ‘Silence’ to get in over ‘Hidden Figures.'”
Nick Roman: “I have a nagging feeling that Colin Farrell will get in for ‘The Lobster.’ But if you’d asked me three days ago, my itching suspicion would have been Jake Gyllenhaal in ‘Nocturnal Animals.’ I’m almost certain I’m overthinking Best Actor, but it wouldn’t be Oscar season if I didn’t second-guess every thought I had.”
thatfilmgirl: “I keep going back and forth on director and who gets that 5th slot. I’m going with Davis but I feel like there’s only weak arguments to be made past Chazelle, Jenkins, Lonergan and Villeneuve. I’m also going on a limb and predicting Jake Gyllenhaal. I know he only has the BAFTA nod but that’s all Gary Oldman and Javier Bardem in ‘Biutiful’ had. I was never fully sold on Viggo being nominated.”
Andy Macca McGaw: “‘The Handmaiden’ getting a couple of technical nods. I have it down for cinematography and production design.”
queenbee: “F it, I’m predicting Emily Blunt and Jake Gyllenhaal. I know, I should get in the bin. Gotta go with my gut.”
RicosMama: “Documentary I’m a little worried about only for the simple fact that I’m not sure if I buy the academy nominating ESPN for this award, right now I have ‘O.J.’ in fifth.”
