“It’s overwhelming,” admits makeup artist Joel Harlow when asked during our recent webcam chat (watch above) about his Oscar nomination for “Star Trek Beyond.” “You know sort of when the announcements are coming out, so I try to distract myself as much as possible.” In fact, Harlow was working on location in Atlanta, GA, when the news broke. “I was running around set, and I didn’t want to check my phone,” he divulges. “Suddenly, texts started coming in, and if it’s one text, you’re not too certain, but once it’s multiple texts, you kind of have a good feeling that maybe you’re one of the nominated.”

The veteran special makeup effects designer won an Oscar for J.J. Abram‘s first installment of the rebooted “Star Trek” franchise in 2009. Harlow previously contended for his work on “The Lone Ranger” (2013). He competes this year against “A Man Called Ove” and “Suicide Squad” alongside Richard Alonzo.
