Oscars scorecard: ‘La La Land’ ends precursor round far in front of rival Best Picture nominees

Breaking down the precursor awards — both nominations and winners — as well as the top Oscar nominations by categories gives us 35 key races that will determine the strongest contenders. Last year’s Best Picture champ, “Spotlight,” went into Oscar night with checkmarks in 21 boxes while its two closest rivals, “The Revenant” and “The Big Short,” outpaced it with 23 and 22 ticks respectively.

After Sunday’s WGA Awards, we all of the 35 boxes are checked (as detailed below). The clear favorite remains “La La Land,” which has ticks in a staggering 31 boxes. It only missed out on the nomination and win boxes for SAG Film Ensemble and a writing win at BAFTA and WGA for Chazelle.

Barry Jenkins‘ “Moonlight” is now at 23 checkmarks after prevailing at the WGA while Denis Villeneuve‘s “Arrival” has a tally of 17 after taking a prize there as well.

Among the other Best Picture nominees, “Manchester by the Sea” has 22 boxes ticked, “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hell or High Water” and “Lion” are up to 13 apiece, “Fences” has an even dozen boxes filled and “Hidden Figures” numbers nine.
