Will 15th time be charm at Oscars for composer Thomas Newman? Listen to new ‘Victoria and Abdul’ track ‘Florence’

Legendary composer Thomas Newman is hoping the 15th time will be the charm with his score for “Victoria and Abdul,” Stephen Frears‘ new film about an unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and a young Indian clerk named Abdul (Ali Fazal). Newman has reaped an impressive 14 Oscar nominations throughout his lengthy career without a single win. Could that finally change this year? Take a listen to “Florence,” one of the tracks from the digitally released soundtrack, and see what you think.

The prolific tunesmith received his first two Academy Award nominations in 1994 for “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Little Women.” He has competed 11 more times for score: “Unstrung Heroes” in 1995, “American Beauty” in 1999, “Road to Perdition” in 2002, “Finding Nemo” in 2003, “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” in 2004, “The Good German” in 2006, “Wall-E” in 2008, “Skyfall” in 2012, “Saving Mr. Banks” in 2013, “Bridge of Spies” in 2015, and “Passengers” in 2016). He also had a song nomination for “Down to Earth” from “Wall-E.”

Thomas isn’t the only musical Newman in his family. His father, Alfred Newman, won Oscars for his original or adapted scores to “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” (1938), “Tin Pan Alley” (1940), “The Song of Bernadette” (1943), “Mother Wore Tights” (1947), “With a Song in My Heart” (1953), “Call Me Madam” (1954), “Love is a Many-Splendored Thing” (1955), “The King and I” (1956), and “Camelot” (1967). His uncle, Lionel Newman, won for adapting the score to “Hello, Dolly” (1969). His cousin, Randy Newman, took home wins for his original songs to “Monsters, Inc.” (2001) and “Toy Story 3” (2010). His brother, David Newman, competed for his score to the animated “Anastasia” (1997), and his sister, Maria Newman, has worked on such films as “The Last of the Mohicans” (1992) and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (2004). He is also the nephew of Oscar-nominee Emil Newman (“Sun Valley Serenade” in 1941) and the cousin of Emmy-contender Joey Newman (“Little People, Big World” in 2008).

“Victoria & Abdul” opens in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, September 22, ahead of a wide expansion on September 29 and October 6. Newman’s score is now available for purchase digitally, and will be released physically on the 22. You can listen to “Florence” from the soundtrack below:
