‘Outlander’: Golden Globes nominate Caitriona Balfe, but cruelly snub the show and Sam Heughan

When the 2018 Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday, December 11, “Outlander” star Caitriona Balfe was honored with her third consecutive nomination as Best Drama Actress. However, “Outlander” fans were none too pleased with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for cruelly snubbing the show’s third season for Best Drama Series and Sam Heughan for Best Drama Actor.

“Outlander” Season 1 earned a Best Drama Series nomination back at the 2016 Golden Globes ceremony, losing out to eventual winner “Mr. Robot.” Due to increased TV competition, “Outlander” has never returned to that main drama category. That was also the year supporting player Tobias Menzies scored a surprise nom, though he was eventually bested by Christian Slater (“Mr. Robot”).

Surprisingly, Heughan has never been nominated at the Golden Globes despite receiving bids at the Critics’ Choice TV Awards and the People’s Choice Awards. Don’t give up hope yet, “Outlander” fans, as sometimes HFPA voters are a few years late. For example, “Breaking Bad” scene-stealer Aaron Paul didn’t receive his first career Globe nom until that show’s final season.

After losing to Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) in 2016 and Claire Foy (“The Crown”) in 2017, will Balfe finally win a Golden Globe at the upcoming 2018 ceremony? She faces tough competition as Best Drama Actress from Foy, Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Deuce”), Katherine Langford (“13 Reasons Why”) and reigning Emmy champ Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”).

What did you think of the “Outlander” Season 3 finale? Our video recappers Rob Licuria and Amanda Spears were mixed, admitting that it felt “rushed.” However, they also were awed by the “breathtaking” underwater scenes. Watch their “Outlander” video recap.
