‘Outlander’ stars Caitriona Balfe & Sam Heughan preview season 3: Their love ‘endures decades’ [WATCH]

“This is a relationship that endures decades,” says Caitriona Balfe in a new interview with Leanne Aguilera (Entertainment Tonight) in which she and her “Outlander” co-star Sam Heughan preview the third season of the Starz time-travel romance (watch above). “Hopefully we’ll get to tell many, many years of that, so you don’t want to repeat yourself. We’ve seen the blossom of first love, and we’ve seen when they’ve had an awful lot of stress in that relationship, but now it’s going to be a different type of reunion. I think people are invested because they believe in this love that Jamie and Claire have, so you’re definitely going to see that.”

“I think we’re going to surprise them,” adds Heughan, teasing what the audience can expect from these new episodes, which are adapted from Diana Gabaldon‘s third novel in the series, “Voyager.” “They have an idea of the books, and they’ll see we’re following the books, but there’s so many more surprises than they’re even contemplating.”

The story includes a long separation — decades long — since Claire Randall (Balfe) returned to her life in the 20th century, “and they’ve become different people, and they have lived other lives,” Heughan explains. Balfe says that getting to know these characters anew is part of the new season’s appeal: “It is that beautiful thing: we’ve gone through little vignettes of her life without Jamie, so you’ll see her in the ’40s and ’50s and ’60s. It’s been really interesting mapping how does a person change in their lifetime, or what are the moments in their life that help them become this woman that we meet finally.”

As for aging the characters physically, Balfe says, “They don’t age at all, do they? Eternal youth!” Find out more when the new season premieres on September 10.
