In “First Wife,” the eighth episode of season three of the Starz hit drama “Outlander,” Claire (Caitriona Balfe) returns to Lallybroch with Jamie (Sam Heughan), where she receives a hostile reception from Jamie’s family, especially sister Jenny (Laura Donnelly), who resents Claire’s sudden return after 20 years away. Things get even worse for the recently reunited couple when Claire discovers that Jamie has made some choices in their time apart which come back to haunt them with a vengeance. The episode was written by Joy Blake and directed by Jennifer Getzinger.
In our ongoing video series, “Outlander” fan Rob Licuria is joined by Amanda Spears to dish the highs and lows of this chapter of the fantasy romance saga. This season is based on “Voyager,” Diana Gabaldon’s third novel in the series of books (watch above).
“First Wife” saw even more conflict between Claire and Jamie, who are navigating their relationship after so many years apart. “They haven’t just come back, reunited, as lovebirds,” Licuria explains. “There’s conflict, there’s issues, they have a lot of baggage. They have a lot of issues about what has happened in the past and how they’re trying to readjust to each other.”
Spears welcomed the drama, especially at the hands of Jamie’s suspicious sister Jenny, who does not welcome Claire back with open arms. “I love Jenny,” she declares. “I think this episode was a good showcase for her, as she’s the voice of reason in all of this. Unlike Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix), Jenny is in the dark. She does not know that Jamie took [Claire] back to the rocks and that she went back to the forties because he wanted to save her life. She doesn’t know any of the time travel stuff, so as far as she’s concerned, [Claire] just ran off and abandoned him,” Spears explains. “She saw the aftermath of her leaving him and had to try to put him back together.” See the chat in full by clicking on the video above.
