Given by a relatively small group of foreign journalists based in the United States, the awards have had a tumultuous history that at times have caused the show to be dropped from network television due mostly to allegations that the award can be purchased by granting the members fancy perks while on press junkets. The award has gained a more prominent place in the derby in recent years, but that is due more to its placement as an Oscar precursor rather than a genuine respect for the kudos themselves.

The award show also has a reputation as the wildest of Hollywood trophy handouts. As opposed to the Oscars with its staid theater-like setting, the Golden Globes are given out at a dinner ceremony traditionally held in the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Alcohol flows freely at the ceremony, often causing presenters and winners to let down their guard or placate themselves as they wait through the long three-hour ceremony for their category.
