Our forum posters are both delighted and dismayed about Tuesday’s Oscar nominations. Many of our most fervent followers are folks who work in Hollywood. They post in our forums under screen names to keep their identities a secret.
We’ve already written about their reactions to the nominations across the four acting categories. Of the other races, they are most enthusiastic about bids by Mel Gibson (“Hacksaw Ridge”) in Best Director and both “The Lobster” (Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou) and “20th Century Women” (Mike Mills) in Best Original Screenplay.
They were surprised by the record-tying 14 nominations for Damien Chazelle‘s “La La Land” and the snubs for Martin Scorsese‘s “Silence” in the tech categories. And they were upset by Tom Ford‘s omissions for writing and directing “Nocturnal Animals.”
Below, just a sampling of what they had to say about the top races at the 89th annual Academy Awards. Take a read and then join in the discussion, if you dare.
LegendOfMatt: “Kubo” in Visual Effects! Wow!
Wombat988: “Passengers” has two more nominations than I would have expected at this point.
jacob121: “Jackie” for score!
Laurent: “Audition” for Best Original Song!!
Jake: YAY “THE LOBSTER!”
Andy Macca McGraw: Holy shit called the “20th Century Women” inclusion.
Riley: “Manchester by the Sea” missed editing. There you go.
James Murphy: Called Mel Gibson, I’m one happy Aussie!
Riley: So much for BAFTA improving their accuracy by employing preferential balloting for the first time.
Shatish Raj: How the hell did that Bengazi film get nominated for sound?
Nick Roman: So happy I called Mel Gibson. With that said, had I known there was a J. Ralph song among the Original Song finalists, I’d have gone 5/5 in that category. The Academy is OBSESSED with that guy, for whatever reason.
AMG: Fourteen for “La La Land.” Incredible!
Priti: Wow…This year’s nominations are quite good. Has different variety of new and old. Very nice mix of diverse people.
Shatish Raj: Surprised “Silence” did not get best costume or production design. They looked very well made.
Paul Hardister: Looks like “Sully” wasn’t snubbed after all. They nominated “Empty Chair” in honor of Clint Eastwood.
Eddy Q: Don’t know if this has been mentioned, but “Deadpool” is the first ever PGA nominee not to get a single Oscar nomination. There have been those with only one nomination before, like “Saving Mr. Banks,” but never none.
GusCruz: Expected snubs that still hurt: “Love and Friendship” across the board. Snubs that should not have happened: “The Handmaiden” in the tech categories.
Boidiva02: And I really wish that Tom Ford had gotten nominated.
PJ Edwards: Oscars So Rigged
