Robert Pattinson on his transformative role in the frenetic crime drama ‘Good Time’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW]

“I always like the characters I play, but I wouldn’t necessarily want to be him,” admits Robert Pattinson about his role in the film “Good Time.” In our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above), he adds, “It is one the gifts you have as an actor in that you really try to empathize with a character that you wouldn’t normally.”

In the acclaimed crime thriller directed by brothers Ben Safdie and Josh Safdie, Pattinson plays Connie Nikas, who is on the run after a bank heist goes horribly wrong. The film has been lauded for its propulsive pacing and its cast, including Oscar nominees Barkhad Abdi and Jennifer Jason Leigh, and especially for the commanding performance by Pattinson, as a desperate and unhinged man trying to save his mentally unstable younger brother (Ben Safdie), who has been arrested following their botched attempt to rob a bank.

For Pattinson, the opportunity to empathize with an unhinged criminal was a challenge he relished. “What intrigues me as a performer,” Pattinson divulges, “is to have completely contradictory elements of someone’s personality and they cancel each other out, so if you try to work out what makes someone tick, you can never really work that out.”

“Because this is so in the present, you’re not really judging his actions,” he explains. “He never thinks that he’s doing anything wrong, so it’s really interesting to play a part where someone thinks they’re never lying and they’re never in the wrong.”
