Friday night the 14 queens of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 9 reunited to discuss the highs and lows of the competition, as well as to throw tons of shade at one another before this week’s grand finale on June 23. Moderated by Emmy-winning series host RuPaul Charles, the girls were asked about some of the season’s most iconic moments, including Valentina‘s legendary mask on-mask off lip synch, and to hear who among them was anointed the $5,000 prize of Miss Congeniality. Read our recap of the reunion below and then vote in our finale poll that asks, “Who do you want to win Season 9?” Also be sure to update your predictions before Friday’s finale when Ru crowns America’s next drag superstar.
Getting right down to business, Ru opened the reunion by addressing one of the season’s biggest controversies — Alexis Michelle‘s complaint that the other girls threw too much shade at her weight during the reading challenges. To reinforce that part of drag is not taking yourself too seriously, Ru brought out the reading glasses and gave the queens one last chance to throw shade at each other. Then Ru threw some shade of her own by asking Charlie Hides about her underwhelming lip synch performance that sent her home. Charlie gave a few excuses in her defense, but the other queens pounced and pressured her to admit that she gave up (she refused to say so).
From there the focus shifted to the two most shocking eliminations of the season, those of Eureka and Valentina. Ru first asked the girls about their reactions to Eureka being removed from the competition on doctor’s order. Reactions ranged from support for Eureka’s future heading into Season 10 and thankfulness that she was eliminated since they saw her as tough competition. Moving on to Valentina’s lip synch, after the girls had a chance to ask Valentina whether or not she prepared for the song they brought up the social media aftermath of her elimination that included her followers saying hateful things to Nina Bo’nina Brown and other contestants. Shea Coulee and Peppermint wanted to understand why Valentina didn’t stick up for the other girls and tell her fans to stop.
Later, Valentina remained in the hot seat once Ru announced the winner of Miss Congeniality. Most people won’t be surprised to hear that Valentina was given the title, but Aja and Farrah Moan were among them. Aja argued that Valentina may have been the fan favorite of the season, but to call her the most congenial felt wrong. Farrah addressed a personal friendship she thought she had with Valentina that from her perspective was disregarded once filming ended.
At the end of the episode, Ru plugged next week’s finale by revealing one last twist to the season — for the first time ever, the final four would compete in a sudden death lip synch smackdown that will contribute to who takes the crown. With that in mind, be sure to update your predictions before Friday, and tell us who you WANT to win in our poll: Peppermint, Sasha Velour, Shea Coulee or Trinity Taylor?
